Assistive Technology Services

What is assistive technology?

Assistive technology, or AT, is the tools and resources used by individuals with disabilities to help improve their quality of life. AT comes in many forms, ranging from the simple such as eyeglasses, knee braces, hearing aides or wheelchairs to the technologically sophisticated such as voice-activated computer systems. Here at Rolling Start the AT department is dedicated to providing information to our consumers that will assist them in finding the AT device that will increase their independence and quality of life. Our AT services include information and referral on AT sources and funding, outreach, public education, case consultation and advocacy.

Rolling Start's 3rd Annual

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION SEMINAR

Tuesday - June 17, 2008 at Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP)

Rolling Start is pleased to announce that we will be presenting our 3rd Annual Assistive Technology Education Seminar on June 17, 2008 at Inland Empire Health Plan in San Bernardino. The continuing goal of this seminar series is to present information about assistive technology (AT) that will educate, bridge gaps, create community and open new doors of opportunity for persons with disabilities. Our objective includes seminars that will examine critical issues such as employment, education, transition and the role assistive technology plays in these areas.

Rolling Start is honored to announce that Martin Sweeney of The Alliance for Technology Access will be the keynote speaker at this year’s seminar. The Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) is an established leader in the field of assistive and accessible technology and is celebrating 20 years of assistive technology accomplishments. Starting with the quest of one family seeking solutions for their daughter with multiple disabilities in 1979, the ATA has grown into a national network that promotes and supports accessible technology solutions for assistive technology resource centers, manufacturers, community programs and networks to empower people to realize their full potential. The ATA connects people with disabilities to technology for lifelong success. Join us for the inspiring story of the ATA and Mr. Sweeney’s insight into where assistive technology and the ATA is heading in the future.

This year’s presentations will include, AT funding and device loan programs, literacy for individuals with developmental disabilities and new captioning technologies. The seminar will also feature AT exhibit tables and information from the 2008 CSUN Technology & Persons with Disabilities Conference. Consumer's Corner

Jeanette Rouzan is one of the many seniors in San Bernardino County that have experienced some type of visual disability that has affected their independence.
Ms. Rouzan has glaucoma, which has prevented her from doing the many daily tasks that are essential to her independence. Tasks such as reading her mail and paying her bills became so difficult that she had to rely on family and friends to assist her. Ms. Rouzan appreciated the assistance from family and friends, but greatly missed her independence.
Then a neighbor told her about Rolling Start. Working with Mark Gomez, the AT Coordinator at Rolling Start, Ms. Rouzan was able to qualify for a CCTV through the Change a Life Grant program. After meeting the grant criteria and completing the application process, she received her CCTV.
Jeanette Rouzan is excited about regaining her independence and loves being able to read her own mail again, pay her own bills and has rediscovered reading novels and flipping through arts and crafts magazines.
AT devices like CCTVs assist persons with visual disabilities like Rouzan, regain their independence.
