Assistive Technology Specialist

Job Title: Assistive Technology Specialist (Non-exempt, 1.0 FTE)

Reports to: Program Manager

Location: San Bernardino

Rolling Start, Inc., Center for Independent Living (RSI) is a 501 c (3) not- for-profit organization that provides advocacy and services to people with all types of disabilities. The mission of RSI is to educate and empower people with disabilities to achieve the independent life of their choice. We have been serving San Bernardino, Mono and Inyo county for 44 years.

Position Description:

The Assistive Technology Specialist, in conjunction with RSI staff provides assistive technology services to consumers and interested individuals through demonstrations, presentations, training, assessment, and acquisition. This individual will provide leadership for the planning and implementation of AT programs, services and supports.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services or related field is preferred, or four (4) years’ experience working in a technology related field.
  • Effective public speaker, good phone, writing, research and interpersonal communication;
  • Effective analytical, organizational, and time management skills;
  • Commitment to working as a Team and assist the organization in implementing its mission vision and values;
  • Ability to use good judgment and discretion, maintain confidentiality and work under minimal supervision.
  • Should possess creativity, critical thinking and strong problem-solving skills;
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Program Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); Google Chrome program suite, e.g. Gmail, calendar, hang-outs, google drive, etc.; experience with database systems is preferred;
  • Knowledge of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, Work Incentives Act, and IDEA preferred;
  • Must demonstrate through actions and language an understanding of Independent Living Philosophy;
  • Bilingual Spanish and/or ASL a plus.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Assistive Technology (AT) Specialist will demonstrate knowledge and experience with a wide variety of current high and low-tech assistive technology and software applications and have a general idea of how these can support individuals with various disabilities;
  • AT Specialist will provide educational resources/trainings about various types of AT to staff, consumers, community based organizations, prospective and current funders;
  • AT Specialist will participate in and demonstrate Assistive Technology at community events, health and resource fairs;
  • Procure, develop systematic retrieval, and disseminate AT information and referral resources and provide case consultation to consumers with disabilities when necessary.
  • Aggressively research and apply for funding or donations from the private and public sector for AT.
  • Responsible for the development of training materials, including power point presentations, brochures, and needs surveys for consumers and the community. AT Specialist will make these available in alternate formats.
  • Maintain all grant required records and submit timely reports.
  • Manage a statewide inventory system (NATADS);
  • Coordinate and manage reporting of activities in CIL Suites, this should include but is not limited to:
    • a) trainings,
    • b) community events;
    • c) device lending,
    • d) nursing facility diversion,
    • e) helping a consumer meet an independent living goal
    • f) 1:1 device instruction;
    • g) AT to support transitions;
  • Develop and manage a database for the recycling of AT items among the consumers and the community at large, this should include a wait list for most commonly requested items;
  • Develop materials and visuals; publish articles for Rolling Start newsletter on success stories and new devices offered;
  • Research current trends in AT and continual surveying of consumer technology needs;
  • Must be willing to work some evenings and weekends;
  • Ability to interact with other AT centers statewide and nationally and participate in meeting or trainings as offered;
  • Responsible for serving satellite office in Victorville, and other outlying areas (Mono/Inyo County). Excessive travel may be required throughout our service area and state;
  • All other duties as assigned.

Voice Options (VO) Program

  • AT Specialist will manage the VO program which will include, but is not limited to: ordering appropriate marketing material, consultation to consumers with speech disabilities and/or their parents if consumer is a minor, ensuring demonstration ipads are appropriately disseminated to eligible consumers; develop systematic retrieval process, order devices for LTL’s, disseminate to consumers and provide technical assistance in the set up of the device.
  • AT Specialist is responsible for VO outreach in the community and to other agencies that serve individuals with speech disabilities;
  • At Specialist will maintain all records in regard to the VO program. Must collect required reports and surveys from program participants;
  • AT Specialist will attend appropriate trainings as required by the program;
  • AT speciallist will provide guidance and direction to the Special Projects Cordinator who will supporting this work.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands may vary. Travel throughout the greater San Bernardino, Inyo and Mono Counties, as well as occasional trips throughout the state for meetings. Must be able to handle multiple projects at one time, lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

Work Environment:

  • The noise level of the office working conditions is low to moderate: mostly indoors, occasionally outdoors: moderate amount of travel: local, regional and statewide.
  • Moderate stress level.
