ONLY TURN OFF THE GAS VALVE IF YOU SMELL GAS
Natural gas presents two types of hazards. It is an:

  • Asphyxiant that robs the body of oxygen.
  • Explosive that can easily ignite.
  • To turn off the valve, use a non-sparking tool to turn
    the valve clockwise one-quarter turn.
  • Remember that, in all cases, natural gas
should only be turned on by a licensed
    technician.
  • Never enter the basement of a structure
that is on fire to turn off any utility.
  • Use a flashlight, not a candle, if a light source is needed to locate and shut off the gas valve.

Securing Gas Appliances

  • Gas appliances are usually fed by flexible metal pipe/hose lines.
  • Make sure that all heavy Gas Appliances are attached to the wall so they will not move during an earthquake and sever the Gas hose.

  • All gas Appliances are required to have a shut off valve between the Gas supply and the appliance. Make sure this valve is in the off position before doing any servicing of the appliance. Valve handle can be different colors.
